Stamford Raises Fines on Parking Tickets

STAMFORD, Conn. — Stamford will be looking to fatten its wallet with expired meters and other parking mistakes as the Board of Representatives approved an ordinance Tuesday night to increase fines on parking tickets.

The board’s vote was unanimous and will take effect immediately, the ordinance said. The amounts of the fines have not been raised since 2003.

City Rep. Terry Adams, D-3, proposed that each class of violations have an increased fine of $5 to bring more revenue in to the city, according to the minutes from the board’s Transportation Committee meeting from March 22.

The increased fines are as follows:

• Parking meter or overtime parking violations are $20, up from $15.

• Class II violations are $40, up from $35. Class II violations include parking too far from the curb, occupying more than one space and blocking a driveway, the city’s cashiering and permitting webpage said.

• Class III violations are $60, up from $55. Class III violations include parking in a fire lane, double parking and parking on a snow emergency route.

• All Class IV violations, except for illegally parking in a handicapped space, are $95, up from $90. (The fine for parking in a handicapped space without a permit will remain at $150, which is set by state law, the ordinance said.) Class IV violations include parking too close to a fire hydrant, parking a commercial vehicle overnight in a residential area and misuse of a city issued parking permit.

To see the complete list, visit the parking ticket information section on the city’s website. In addition to seeing the fine amounts for each violation, the section also explains how to pay a fine and appeal tickets.

Under the new rules, violators would have 30 days to pay or appeal the fine levied instead of 15. If the fine is not paid or appealed within that period, an additional $25 will be added to the fine; previously, it was $20. If after 60 days and the first penalty the fine is still not paid or appealed, another $25 will be added, up from $20.
