WORCESTER, Mass. - Direct Air, the only air carrier at Worcester Regional Airport, has cancelled all its flights through May 15, leaving Central Mass. residents who booked spring vacation flights in the lurch.

The carrier, who flew to Myrtle Beach, SC and Orlando/Sanford Fla. out of Worcester, unexpectedly suspended all flights Tuesday, stranding travelers.

"Direct Air finds it necessary to suspend flight operation from Tuesday, March 13, 2012 until May 15, 2012," the airline posted on its website. "This decision was made to address operational matters. We are currently evaluating strategic alternatives for Direct Air. Direct Air is committed to our passengers, employees, and the communities we serve."

Passengers holding reservations for Direct Air Flights in the meantime were advised to contact their credit card companies to arrange for a refund.

They'll reorganize and come back as Derelict Air. (Ouch!)

My husband and I were in Myrtle Beach on a 4-day vacation from Sunday until today (Thursday). We heard the news about Direct Air from The Daily Millbury on Facebook and email when I logged into my computer on Wednesday. Since we were scheduled to leave on Direct Air the next day, we had to spend much of Wednesday finding another way home. Many frustrating hours were spent on the phone, and computer, and driving back to the airport trying to find someone to talk to about it. We were able to find seats on a US Airways flight into Boston that left at 7:10 this morning. However, it cost us $600 for the flight, plus we had to take the bus to Framingham (another $23). We might also get charged a $25 fee because we had to return the rental car early. Not to mention the half day today of lost vacation time.

Another kick in the head. Is Worcester Airport an airline graveyard? I remember how busy the place was before they built that "new and improved" terminal. (Guess that's why they do call it a "terminal".)

I too had flights booked. I am more sad than angry. Got a full refund from Citibank . I loved being able to fly from Worcester. I guess i am canceling my April getaway :(

Grrrrr. Just when I needed that vacation more than ever. Thanks for nothing, Direct Air. Had flights booked to visit my parents in West Palm Beach in early April.
