SHREWSBURY, Mass. — Expect some heavy rain this weekend across Central Massachusetts.

The next system is approaching and promises to bring a period of heavy rain and possibly some strong winds to our area. Rain should begin in the pre-dawn hours Friday morning and continue until Saturday morning, likely pulling away from the area by Saturday afternoon.

The rain could include scattered thunderstorms Friday afternoon and night. Total rainfall is predicted to be around 1.5 inches with some scattered areas of up to 3 inches where thunderstorms occur.

There may be urban and street flooding, particularly where fallen leaves have blocked catch basins. The Friday afternoon commute likely will be the most impacted by the storm.

Stronger winds are forecast to occur later Friday afternoon and Friday night, when we could see gusts up to 35 mph. Temperatures should remain in the high 50s and lower 60s throughout the storm and it also will feel pretty muggy.

In the days following this event, our weather will become tranquil for a while, with clear to partly cloudy skies and cool temperatures. I am seeing some signs that we could turn sharply colder in about 10 days, but that is a long time out and the subject for another day.
