WESTBOROUGH, Mass. — Travelers Insurance is contradicting reports that it is pulling out of Westborough completely. While its office at One Research Drive will remain open, 120 positions at that office are being eliminated.

"Travelers is reducing the size of its Westborough office, resulting in position eliminations that will impact approximately 120 employees over the next six months," Travelers spokesman Gary Griffin wrote in a statement. "We are working closely with impacted employees to ease the transition by helping them find other positions within the company or providing them with severance and outplacement benefits."

The statement continued: "Travelers is not leaving Westborough. We are reducing the size of our Westborough office through position eliminations, consolidation of support and service functions into other branch locations and reassigning claim positions to the New England Claim Center in Middleborough. Travelers will maintain a small presence at the Westborough location with sales and support staff."

Griffin declined to say how many employees currently work at One Research Drive, or how many will remain after six months, citing company policy.

According to Westborough Town Manager James Malloy, his office received notification of the lay-offs in accordance with Massachusetts state law.

Malloy said that Travelers moved into the building it shares with The University of Phoenix about eight months ago.

Had Travelers pulled out of Westborough completely, the impact to the town would have been minimal, he said. As far as employment in Westborough in general, Malloy said the town is in relatively good shape, citing recent job retainment over the past 18 months and 2,410 new jobs, including 1,200 new jobs at BJs corporate headquarters.

"The trend is that we've had real success," Malloy said.
