WESTBOROUGH, Mass. — The Stop & Shop supermarket on 32 Lyman St. is closed after a fire was contained in the deli section Sunday afternoon.
Westborough Fire Capt. Philip Kitteredge said the station received a call at 1:19 p.m. by an assistant manager, and when the department arrived on scene a large amount of smoke was seen coming from the roof and front doors. However, Kitteredge said the actual fire was contained to the deli area thanks to the store's sprinklers. No injuries were reported.
"The sprinklers did a good job containing the fire," he said.
Kitteredge said Stop & Shop employees also "did a great job" in responding to the fire by activating the sprinklers and alerting the fire department. Kitteredge said there appeared to have been about 25 to 30 employees at the store when the fire broke out. There is no word on how many customers were at the store.
There was extensive smoke and water damage which needs to be repaired, and the sprinkler and fire alarm systems will need to be restored before the store can reopen, said Kitteredge. "There's a lot of food that needs to be replaced," he said.
Hopkinton, Shrewsbury, Northborough, Southborough and Grafton units also responded to the fire. The last Westborough vehicle returned the the fire station at 4:30 p.m.
According to Kitteredge, the fire started from a rotisserie barbecue machine and rose up into the ceiling. Westborough Fire and the state fire marshal are investigating.
