WESTBOROUGH, Mass. — With a win on Monday, Westborough Rangers girls soccer will clinch Mid-Wach B division title, but coach Paul Mumby said he still has one dilemma.

"I've probably got seven or eight girls who are worthy of being all stars on my team," he said. "It's tough to pick between them."

Westborough won its second matchup with Quabbin Thursday, by the same margin as the first, 5-0.

Olivia McGourty opened up the scoring late in the first half and the Rangers were able to stretch the lead to 3-0 just before halftime on goals from Mia Natale and Carly Flahive.

Flahive, a freshman, added another in the second half, adding to her team-leading total of 11. Olivia McGourty finished off the scoring with a goal late.

"I'd like to say I'm a good coach, but you can only coach what you've been given," Mumby said. "At the moment we're flying high."

The Rangers have a game against state power on Monday and then return to Joseph R. Mewhiney Field on Monday night. They have the chance to clinch the division under the stars during Westborough's "Week of Lights." The Rangers beat Fitchburg 7-0 when they met earlier this month.

BOYS SOCCER

Quabbin 2, Westborough 1: Rangers boys soccer is making life difficult on themselves.

On Thursday, after losing 2-1 to Quabbin, a team that once looked like a lock for the playoffs is now 5-6-2.

"The two goals we conceded were just awful — both defensive errors," coach Michael Griffin said.

Brendan Goodliffe scored the goal on a pass from Steven Frame 16 minutes into the first half to tie the score 1-1. Quabbin scored with about 16 minutes remaining and Griffin said his team couldn't really mount an offensive attack, but did have two goals disallowed because of off-sides penalties.

"It's frustrating because the last few games they played pretty well and lost," he said. "Today they absolutely threw it away."

The Rangers needed three wins with nine games to go to qualify for postseason play — they now need the same, but with just five. The Rangers are back in action against Nipmuc Saturday, then return home to play a night game Tuesday during Westborough's "Week of Lights" against Fitchburg.
